Reflections and Reviews

Pathways to Development
2011 saw Melbourne University host our annual Pathways to Development event, linking EWB members with opportunities to meaningfully engage in the development sector. Co-hosted with Young Engineers Australia, it was a highlight on the Year of the Humanitarian Engineer calendar. It was an event that offered something for all, education volunteering positions, and was attended by many members from right across Victoria.

The day long workshop brought together volunteers and development practisioners from Australia's leading development groups to discuss volunteer opportunities and pathways for engineers to engage in the development sector. Presentations from RedR, World Vision, AYAD, AusAID, Médecins Sans Frontières, and of course, Engineers Without Borders, were insightful and highlighted the various roles and opportunities available. Thankyou to all of our speakers, volunteers and attendees for making the day so awesome!

School Outreach Tonle Sap workshops

It was another ripper of a month for the Year 9 High School Outreach Program. We saw a range of innovative (and some pretty intelligent!) solutions to adressing the challenges faced by the Tonle Sap community of Cambodia. These are the kind of kids that give you hope for a future that extends beyond Play Station and Justin Bieber.

The last workshop was such a success that we have managed to squeeze a fourth workshop for the year into the calendar to run this October. The workshops have done such a good job of stoking the passion for development engineering with our volunteers that sometimes its hard to know who gets more out of it - the EWB volunteers or the kids that participate! Trivia Fundraising Event

On Friday 26th August, the EWB Victoria Region held its annual trivia fundraising event. Held at the Fitzroy Town Hall, the evening was themed “Bush Bash” and attracted 265 people for an evening of trivia (none of which were trivial), bush tucker food, and fabulous company.

The attendees included EWBers, corporate partners, those wanting to know more about the organisation, friends and family – it was an eclectic mix of passionate people, all in deep discussion on whether David Bowie’s famous hit is Space Odyssey or Space Oddity.

The event raised $5500, with all funds going directly back to EWB’s local projects, initiatives and events in the Victoria Region. EWB would like to thank all of those who attended for what was a great event and we look forward to next year!

Spokes in The Wheel
This project is run in conjunction with SAIL (Sudanese Australia Integrated Learning). SAIL run a tutoring program on Saturday mornings at several locations throughout Melbourne (including Footscray, Brabrook and Dandenong) and EWB's Spokes project is run as an activity with the kids after the tutoring.

EWB collects old bikes and holds "working bees" where EWB volunteers fix the old bikes. these bikes are then taken to SAIL where volunteers teach children how to ride the bikes, road safety issues and general maintenance of the bikes. After the activity, the children are then given a bike, helmet and lock to take home and keep.
